ACADEMIC RECOGNITION FOR CONTINUATION OF STUDIES AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY

The qualifications awarded, as they are legally issued by an entity established according to the legal system and belonging to the Swiss university area, are suitable for the purposes of recognition pursuant to the 1997 Lisbon Convention of the Council of Europe on the mutual recognition of university qualifications, ratified by Switzerland on 1 February 1999 and by Italy with Law no. 148 of 11 July 2002.

Convention

All Italian citizens resident in Italy who have obtained an academic qualification abroad may exercise all the rights connected to the possession of the qualification.

Pursuant to art. 54 of Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Union, the host Member State shall ensure that the interested parties have the right to use the qualification of the Member State of origin, and possibly its abbreviation, in the language of the Member State of origin. The host Member State may require that the qualification be followed by the name and location of the institution or jury that awarded it.

In September 2011, the Swiss-EU Joint Committee on the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons decided to apply Directive 2005/36/EC in Switzerland from 1 November 2011.

N.B. in Europe there is no automatic recognition of qualifications. In Italy foreign qualifications have no legal value. The validity of a foreign qualification is given by its conformity to the law of the foreign country where it was obtained, the fact that it is or is not recognized in Italy is not relevant to its validity.
